The passing phase

Find the next pass.

The Charleston happens after the deal and before regular turns. Use this sequence as a direction aid; check your table’s rules before handling exceptions.

First Charleston

Pass three face-down tiles each time: right → across → left. The linked association rulebook calls this opening sequence mandatory, with a rare exception. Confirm the rule your group follows.

The order at a glance

First sequence
  1. →RightThree tiles
  2. ↑AcrossThree tiles
  3. ←LeftThree tiles
Directions are relative to your seat. Keep passed tiles face-down.

If everyone continues

The published second Charleston goes left, across, right. It happens only with the players’ agreement. A possible courtesy exchange follows according to the table’s rules.

When to stop and check

  • Someone wants to stop before the optional second sequence.
  • You cannot choose three tiles from your own rack for a final pass.
  • Your table uses a different rule for a blind or courtesy pass.

These cases need a rule-specific explanation and expert check before this page can act as a complete Charleston guide. For now, ask an experienced player and consult the rules used by your group.
